Claremont Prep School pupils lobby Parliament!

A group of 30 children, Eco Warriors, School Council representatives and reporters from The Arrow, made a historic trip to the Houses of Parliament this week to present our petition to local MP, Sally-Ann Hart!  It was an incredibly exciting day!  After an early start at 7:00 am, we arrived in time to meet the MP.  Joe presented the petition and Tristan, Elodie and Elliott asked probing questions about the sewage pollution affecting our beaches.  Isadora, Lani, Lwandile and Aven had all written letters and Ezra presented a drawing.  The petition asks that action be taken before 2035 to stop Southern Water dumping sewage in the sea.  Sally-Ann Hart was very impressed with Claremont’s efforts to take action with this big issue and offered her support for our cause.  The MP is working with Southern Water to bring an earlier solution to the problem.

Pollution of our seas and rivers is a huge issue – not just locally but globally.  I am so proud of our Claremont students and community for making their voices heard and taking their petition to the Houses of Parliament.

Next came a tour of the Houses of Parliament and finally, the icing on the cake, a visit to the gallery in the House of Commons where some of the children were lucky enough to see a full House, complete with the Prime Minister, debating the issues of the day!
