New Life for Crisp Packets

Over the last month at the school, pupils have been bringing in crisp packets as part of a house competition. The purpose of this has been to collect empty packets for the Crisp Packet Project, based in St.Leonard’s. Led by Pen Houston, they are an amazing group of people who have created a movement to give life to one-use plastics and to help those less fortunate than ourselves – the packets are used to create survival blankets and survival packs which are distributed to the homeless both locally and further afield. A worthy cause that turns single-use plastic into multi-use!

Last week, Mr Slattery visited the group’s HQ to deliver the crisp packets collected, which were gratefully received. The group are based in the Y Centre, St. Paul’s Road, in St. Leonards. In their fantastic workshop they have plenty of gift ideas for Christmas, shown in the photos below. The numerous items are lovingly made from recycled materials.

Claremont will be receiving a visit from Pen and her team in the New Year when our eco-warriors will get a chance to find out how to make some of the blankets. It would be great if other schools had this opportunity too. If you wish to donate to the project, you can find their crowdfunding page here – this will specifically enable Pen to visit local schools to spread the word with her project. We would love to hear about any donations made by the Claremont community.

The winners of the collection were Sparta. The totals were Sparta 1.47 Kg, Athens 1.15 kg, Corinth 0.69 kg. Overall, Mr. Slattery estimates about 650 packets were collected.
