20th January 23
On the 17th of January, Year 12 students spent a day in the Physics department of The University of Sussex. Students got to participate in experiments directly related to their Physics syllabus including some time in the lab using cloud chambers to detect the trails of alpha radiation. We then had a tour of a Research Laboratory where scientists explained their experiment using high powered LASERs to “freeze” an atom.
After lunch we were treated to a lecture on Astronomy and our students completed an A-level required practical; Young Modulus using a data logging Tensometer. This proved an excellent opportunity for the students to perform experiments in a University lab with equipment not normally available to them. We were then allowed to participate in a number of other practical mechanics experiments which gave the students a great insight into the hands-on approach to Physics. The fantastic experience of being able to spend a day around a modern university campus gave the students a valuable insight into what university life is like.
What a great trip, Mr Richardson!
