EAL & Multilingualism

At Claremont, we celebrate each student’s linguistic heritage, fostering an environment where languages merge fluidly to enhance learning and promote global perspectives. In our lessons, we strive to create an inspiring, inclusive space where amazing learning happens through active use and appreciation of multiple languages. Recognizing and maintaining home languages is crucial, with parents and carers playing a vital role in our linguistic community. We believe that our multilingual vision reflects our commitment to preparing students for an ever-shrinking world where global connections are essential.

Claremont School - Pre high School Programme

Claremont is a truly international environment. As well as having international students from more than 20 countries in the boarding house, we also have many day students for whom English is not their first language. We embrace this fact as something that enriches all in the community. Our staff received comprehensive training on how to ensure that language is something that enhances the learning for all, rather than being seen as an impediment.

At Claremont we offer a range of different options for students coming from international environments. These include:

  • One Year GCSE Programme
  • Bespoke A Level and/or BTEC Programmes
  • Bespoke GCSE Programmes

Programme overview

The Claremont Pre-High School and Pre-A Level programmes both aim to meet the needs of our international students, for whom English is a second language.

They are carefully designed for the specific needs of students who wish to progress onto an academic course, with intensive English language lessons in small classes, led by specialist language teachers. Both programmes meet the educational and emotional needs of our learners and introduce them to the UK curriculum in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The programmes are unique, in so far as they combine a careful mix of intensive English language tuition, alongside whole school classes and a broad co-curricular programme. This ensures that our international students are fully integrated and valued members of our community.

Claremont also actively encourages students to take GCSEs and A Levels in their mother tongue language. This will often enhance any potential University application.
