Year 9

In the first year of Senior School, we continue to offer a wide range of subjects and a broad educational experience.

All students study English, Mathematics and Science, which is taught by Biology, Chemistry and Physics specialists. Information Technology is compulsory in Year 9, as are History, Geography, Art, Music, Dance and Drama. A Global Perspectives course delivers tasters of subjects which will be available at A Level, including: Psychology, Philosophy, Religion and Politics.

Year 9 students are expected to study one foreign language – either French or Spanish. Students with SEN or where English is a second language are also encouraged to study French or Spanish, there is an option to take extra lessons in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science instead, where appropriate.

Senior Year 9 - Square

In addition to the core curriculum, we offer Year 9 students the chance to choose a programme that allows them to extend their learning in the direction of their choice. These programmes are constantly changing, but currently include:

Humanities (Politics, Religious Studies and Classical Civilisation)

On the Humanities Learning Enrichment Programme, learning focuses on where the past meets the present and the future is shaped! Students uncover a rich tapestry of religions, explore diverse beliefs, customs and the traditions which shaped civilizations. They also discover the power of spirituality and humanity’s quest for meaning.

Students journey back to the Classical era to discover the mighty civilizations of Greece and Rome, ancient wonders, epic myths, and the cultural foundations of our world. They will step into the shoes of a seasoned politician by gaining insights into governance, persuasive communication and critical thinking skills.

Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

A series of professionally-led performance workshops enable students to go on their own creative journey, broaden and deepen their skills and create theatre, music and dance that they are passionate about. The program offers a transformative journey on which students quickly discover that the freedom and the discipline that the Performing Arts demands enables them to be heard, connected to others and able to ‘have a go’ without fearing the outcome.

Enterprise in Action

This programme empowers Year 9 students to explore business concepts, develop entrepreneurial skills, and engage in real-world challenges. Students will learn key principles such as marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship through hands-on activities, including creating business plans and pitching ideas.

They will participate in national competitions, gaining practical experience and enhancing teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills. The programme includes workshops on financial literacy and branding, and fosters innovation, preparing students for future business opportunities. Students gain invaluable skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and digital literacy.
